Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is a
geographical region located in north-western Tanzania and extends to
south-western Kenya. This park is best known for the phenomenal migration that plays out every year. Over two million large mammals carve across the plains in a circular trek; their steady instinctive movements tied to the land and grass and rain. Of course, where large groups of game thrive so do predators; lions, cheetahs, hyenas and leopards are common sightings on our Serengeti holiday safaris. Much of the Serengeti was known to outsiders as Maasailand. The Maasai, who have grazed their cattle on the Serengeti's enormous plains for centuries, call it Siringitu, "the place where the land moves on forever." The vast treeless plains of the Serengeti are in fact just that - an endless expanse of wilderness stretching to the horizon in every single direction, and it's only fitting that a wilderness area this massive sustains the world's largest concentration of wildlife. It's important to realise that the Serengeti has distinct regions which witness greater game concentrations at certain times of the year. That said, Serengeti holiday safaris are magnificent throughout the year as there are always good resident populations of big game. |
