Queen Elizabeth National Park
The 1978km2 Queen Elizabeth National Park ravishes in a
spectacular locality on the rift valley base between Lakes Edward along
with George where a mosaic of habitats affirms the existence of the 95
mammal species and a stimulating 612 variety of birds.40 years ago, Douglas Willocks acknowledged the abundant characteristics that led to its conception in 1952. 1,978 square kilometres, in area and is located astride the Equator in the Western Rift valley of South West Uganda, about to the Southern most tip of the fabled, mist covered “Mountains of the Moon- Rwenzori Mountains and is contiguous with Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo Zaire. It is a region of varied habitats including open grassland with thickets, thick bush, forest, swamps and lake shore. Queen Elizabeth National Park together with Virunga encircle Lake Edward which is connected to Lake George by the Kazinga Channel. Wildlife status of Queen Elizabeth National Park: Over 95 mammal species has been recorded in QENP, the highest of any Ugandan national park. Ten primate species are present, including chimpanzees, Primate Safari Uganda. L’Hoest’s monkey, spotted hyena, Defassa waterbuck, and vervet, blue, red-tailed, black-and-white colobus and olive baboon, the elusive semi-aquatic sitatunga antelope in papyrus swamps around Lake George. Buffaloes are present but are primarily restricted to Maramagambo forest. The park’s elephants display affinities with the smaller and slightly hairier forest-dwelling race of elephant found in the Congo. The Ishasha and Mweya form a sanctuary for the tree-climbing lions. |
