Although most of the reserve is arid, Uaso Nyiro River provides a permanent water supply. Riverine forest fringe the river banks with the doum palm taking the day as its fruits are a delicacy for the elephants. The animal species found here are adapted to the arid environment, and are particularly found in the northern frontier. They are; the beisa oryx, gerenuk, grevy's Zebra, and reticulated giraffe.
